Medicine and Intensive Care for Horses
Our Equine Hospital, situated at our Anstead facility, offers a comprehensive range of services in a dedicated environment. We have 10 intensive care stables, including two dedicated isolation stables located separate to the main intensive care barn. Intensive care stables are equipped for continuous intravenous fluid therapy, and are fully monitored via CCTV. Dedicated on-call veterinarians are able to attend within 5 minutes to address any changes in patient status that necessitate immediate attention.We have dedicated foal boxes, enabling us to treat and manage sick and recumbent foals in a safe environment whist allowing the mare to remain bonded to her foal. Our facility is equipped with a hoist and slings for selected large animal patients that may require assisted recumbency care.In addition to our intensive case stables, our hospital also has an additional 14 stables to house non-intensive patients. Eight turnout yards are available, including two which may house mare and foals, and two which are dedicated to higher biosecurity patients.Our hospital is equipped with ample equipment to diagnose, manage and treat a variety of medical conditions in horses such as, but not limited to:

- Endocrine disorders, including PPID (“Equine Cushing’s”), insulin resistance, and Equine Metabolic Syndrome
- Laminitis
- Liver disease
- Kidney and urinary diseases
- Cardiac diseases
- Ophthalmic conditions, including corneal ulcers and lacerations, stromal abscesses
- Neurologic disorders
- Dermatologic conditions, including “Queensland Itch”, sarcoids
- Sick and dummy foals, in addition to an adoption program for orphan foals
- Endoscopy
- Flexible 3m endoscope for gastroscopy
- Flexible 1.5 m endoscope for airways, bladders
- Rigid endoscope for oral and dental examinations
- Dynamic scope for assessment of upper airway conditions
- Ultrasound
- Abdominal, thoracic, cardiac, urogenital, ophthalmic, musculoskeletal
- Electrocardiogram, including continuous 24-hour monitoring and exercise testing
- Blood gas analyser for assessment of respiratory blood gases and acid-base status
- In house blood machines capable of routine haematology and biochemistry, in addition to stall-side blood glucose, lactate, serum amyloid A, triglyerides. Blood testing for endocrinology (ACTH, insulin, AMH) is available through an external laboratory.

We also have the capability to provide interventional diagnostics, such as biopsies (including ultrasound- and endoscope-guided), CSF sampling, bacterial and fungal culture, cytology, transtracheal wash, and bronchoalveolar lavage.
