At WestVETS we offer an adoption service for orphan foals. The advantage of our program is that the mares that we have induced to produce milk have NOT had to create a foal to do so. The quality of milk produced by these mares is similar to a normal post-foaling mare. We are able to provide mares that will adopt the foal and develop a maternal bond that mimics a foaling mare. While there are excellent milk replacers on the market at the moment, there is a large amount of time and money invested in the feeding of an orphan foal. Additionally, orphaned foals often develop poor social skills towards other horses and abnormal/dangerous behaviour towards humans. This adoption program provides a solution for these problems and provides a socially balanced and healthy foal.
