The video below shows an equine surgery being performed at our WestVETS Equine Hospital.
Equine Surgery and Hospital
We proudly offer a modern and state of the art equine surgical facility. Our operating theatre is outfitted with a hydraulic surgery table and mechanical gantry system allowing us to anaesthetize and recover horses in a padded recovery room. Veterinary anaesthetists monitor blood pressure, ECG, blood oxygen saturation and carbon dioxide levels using modern monitoring equipment whilst your horse is under general anaesthesia.
At WestVETS we have very experienced practitioners and specialists on staff allowing us to offer all current surgical procedures including arthroscopy, colic surgery, rig surgery, eye surgery including grafts, joint and tendon sheath flushes, wind surgery, and sarcoid and tumour surgery.
Our hospital facility allows us to provide post surgery care, intensive care for the critically ill patient and hospitalisation for internal medicine patients. We have staff available for all emergency and urgent procedures.
Our facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and we accept referrals from other veterinary practices.
Neonatal Foal Care
Premature and sick foals often require intensive care. We have dedicated veterinarians and nurses that provide round the clock care for these patients. We are equipped to provide intravenous fluids, oxygen support and assisted feeding as required.
In our hospital we have specially designed foal boxes that allow mares and foals to be housed in the same stable while maintaining the safety of the foal while facilitating intensive treatment.
Compromised foals can deteriorate quickly so if you have any doubts as to the health of your foal seek immediate veterinary attention. There is no doubt that early intervention results in better outcomes.
Laboratory Services
At WestVETS we perform a large range of in-house laboratory testing. We offer pre-anaesthetic blood tests, general health profiles and racing profiles. Our in-house laboratory services include haematology, blood gases, biochemistry, electrolytes and cytology. Our onsite lab enables the critically ill patient the benefit of a full body function blood test with test results available within 30 minutes. Access to a regional laboratory permits us to offer a full pathology service.
Our veterinarians are able to fully evaluate and interpret performance horse profiles, making recommendations as required.
Our laboratory is also used for the processing of samples for irap™ joint therapy, PRP, and Adipose Derived Stem Cells for tendon and ligament treatments.
